The Dentist
Tyrus had his first visit to the dentist today. I made the appointment about three weeks ago and when I made it they gave me some hints to start doing some things that would make the trip a little easier. For example, I started telling him what a big boy he was to be going to the dentist. I also told him that it would be tons of fun because they were going to tickle his teeth. It definitely worked and he was soooooo excited this morning when we dropped Mary off at Andria's and he got to stay in the car. All I heard was, "Going to the dentist! Going to the dentist! Gonna get a toy!" When we got there I obviously had some paperwork to do and the waiting room is totally decked out for kids. The movie "Cars" was playing, which went along great with Ty's shoes! There was also a fort to climb up in and play. There were video games and the room was decorated like the jungle. Ty walked into that place with his head held up so high and told the receptionist "Hey!". He kept wanting to go thru the door where they work on teeth. He would constantly come up to me, point to the door, and say "I go in there Mama? I want to go in there." When the nurse finally came out and called his name he stood up with the gigantic smile on his face and walked thru that door like he had done it thousands of times before. The nurse actually said, "He sure is excited to be here."

The first thing they did was take x-rays of Ty's mouth. He did GREAT!! Anyone who has been to the dentist knows that those things they put in your mouth are very uncomfortable. He did request to sit in my lap. The nurse asked me if there was any chance that I was expecting and I said No. No. No. and ummmm No. During the x-ray process the nurse did notice a spot on of Ty's back tooth. She just noted that the dentist needed to take a look at it.

So, the other nurse called Ty over and he was a little hesitant at this point. However, he walked over to her and sat in her lap and let her show him all the tools that she would be using to "tickle his teeth". Then he sat on the chair and as she leaned him back he got a little more upset. I told him to just lye there like he was in his big boy bed and it worked! He opened his mouth and let the hygienist work on his teeth. Then the dentist came over to check everything out. Her name was Doctor Margaret and she was very nice. She did say that Ty has two areas that need to be worked on. I think she could tell as she told me this that I was tearing up because she immediately put her hand on my shoulder and told me that it is nothing that I could help. She also said that Ty's teeth are very deep and that a toothbrush probably was not even reaching as deep as they go. At this point we have to go back on May 18th to have the two "sugar spots" worked on. Ty got really upset towards the end of the visit and was really ready to leave. He picked a race car out of the bucket for his toy. He actually picked 10 race cars, but had to put 9 of them back. When we walked into the area to make are appointment he could see Waffle House next door and he grabbed my face to look at him and said, "I want to go there and eat a sandwich". Unfortunately, the visit took a little too long and I couldn't take him there to eat like I planned. I got him something in the drive-thru at Chick-Fil-A and he was happy.

When we got to Andria's he was really tired and I suspect that he went to bed early today. He did, however, use the potty while I was there!! He's on a roll!

I am REALLY nervous about how he will react when we take him back. They stressed to me that the medicine they give him will totally relax him and he won't remember a thing. He will also get to take a video and watch it on a large flat screen television while they are working on his teeth. Neil's going with us so that I won't have to wait by myself. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Tyrus, all the nurses kept telling me how amazed they were that you were so good today. They were shocked that a little boy that is not even three sat in the chair all by himself and didn't cry. I was so proud of you!!

Are you wondering where the pictures are? Well, you can blame my camera for that one. It decided to die in the parking lot as I was taking a "before" picture of Tyrus while he was still excited.

I'm glad you posted this! L is going in a couple of weeks. I'll do the tickle thing with him. Don't worry about the spots - I"m sure they would have told you if you should have been brushing them better. Breastmilk is not good for sleeping babies, so I can't wait to see what they say about L's teeth...
